Day 14 - Sunday May 11- Belorado to Villafranca Montes De Oca - 7 miles

We planned a short day because we needed some rest. The virus lingers and we lag. It was much cooler this morning and overcast and foggy as we began. It felt like it might rain at any moment. I started off well but after a hour, I began to slow. It helped knowing that it would probably be only 3 hours of walking today.

To the right is all that is left from a major monastery begun in the 9th century. Stoney waves to a fellow pilgrim as he passes. The misting rain cut the dust today.

Again this morning there were many of us out early. Some leave as early as 5 am. Because we planned a short day we left at 7 am.

I had my head down and would have missed this but Stoney said look at that. I took a pic from afar and when I cropped it, we got a better view. This is the Ermita de Neustra SeƱora de la Pena cut into rock. Legend holds that in 712 an image of the child Jesus was hidden under a bell to protect it from the conquering Muslims.

We stopped for a cheese omelet and coffee after walking about two hours. Sat with a woman and her brother we have seen and talked with before. They are from Puerto Rico. He worked in Atlanta for more than 20 yrs. and retired to Oregon.

It was raining when we left the bar and we used the umbrellas. It also seemed as if the temperature was dropping.

When we arrived at our destination, we were surprised. We thought we had another town to walk through. Our hotel is on the Camino. A doctor from Spain walked the Camino and wanted to give back. There is an albergue here as well. It's a beautiful place with lots of history.

Hotel Sant Anton Abad and albergue.

Church next door.
Our room below.
We enjoyed a very good dinner and went to bed early as usual.
Stoney's first course was potatoes with chorizo followed by meatballs, French fries and a small salad. I had spaghetti, baked chicken breast, French fries and small salad. Desert was tiramisu.
