Day 22- Monday, May 19 - Caldadilla de la Cueza to Sahagun - 13 miles

Day 22 - Monday, May 19 - Caldadilla de la Cueza to Sahagun

Another day on the Meseta. We had an option to continue on a quiet woodland path leaving bed bug hotel but we never saw it. Probably for the best because it was remote with few waymarks and we may have disappeared never to be found. So we walked the gravel path along the highway. We didn't see another person for hours. We heard a cuckoo off to our left; it has been a common occurrence.

We passed through Ledgios and Terradillos de Los Templarios (population 80)--the half way point between St Jean Pied de Port and Santiago de Compostela.
We had never seen ground plowed in this fashion.

We walked by San Nicholas Obispo Church but it was locked up.
We came upon a little rest area and stopped for about 10 minutes. Finally, some pilgrims walked past us and one on a bike.

A short time later we stopped for coffee at a beautiful new place. I may be a bit confused because this was before San Nicolas church but I am too tired to change the blog.
We must have been out early I front of a bubble of pilgrims because from this point forward we saw lots of pilgrims.

We entered the Provencia de Leon today which the guidebook notes is the largest, wealthiest and most populous (2.5 million) area we will pass through. It also has the most varied terrain which sounds good to us at this point in time.

We walked almost all day by the road except when we turned right and walked along a river which took us over this bridge and to the hermitage of Our Lady of the Bridge Ermita Virgen del Puente.

The pilgrim with the dog is originally from Brazil but lives in the mountains near St. Jean Pied de Port, France. He has walked over 3,000 km and on his way back home. We followed the young man in the orange pants a good part of this day.
Stopped here for a short break and then into Sahagun our destination.

That is the Puerta de Sahagun Hotel in the distance but we did not know it as we walked on. Eventually we passed under the N-120 bypass and could see a large HOTEL on the side of the building. I hoped it would be our hotel.

We entered at the wrong entrance but a man directed us to the reception area.

Allie and Karen from South Africa were in the lobby. Karen has a foot problem and they will take the train to Leon. The third member of their group, Jill, is walking to Leon.

Beautiful floors and marble.

We are pampered pilgrims at the end of this 13 mile day. We can see a stork nest and the mother with the baby from our window.

Stoney is sneezing and hacking. Is this the next round of virus???
